Antioxidant
Glutathione is an antitoxin and is part of an enzyme system that helps protect against environmental and metabolic toxins. It helps protect the body from free radicals. 10 Glutathione levels are drastically depleted in people with chronic illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, and autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus), leaving them seriously anti-oxidant deficient.4
Cigarette smoke
Glutathione’s main uses are to combat all types of pollution and many irritated body states, often those generated by chemical use.10
Radiation, heavy metal toxicity, and chemical exposure
Glutathione helps to detoxify chemicals into less toxic forms.10 Over the years, the accumulation of toxins in air and water pollutants, processed foods, and chemical exposure takes its toll on the amount of available glutathione.2
Cancer and HIV
Antioxidants such as glutathione help prevent viral replication.1 Glutathione helps get nutrients and amino acids to the lymphocytes and phagocytes, thus helping cells combat immunity.10 People who have a deficiency in glutathione have a greater risk of developing diseases such as cancer.2 Glutathione acts as a detoxifying agent specifically on many of the most common carcinogens.2
Aging, cataracts, stroke and brain injury
The decline in glutathione levels appears to be more consistent in explaining age-related disorders than any other antioxidant fluctuation.2
