    What is Florastor®?
Florastor® is a probiotic made of live freeze dried yeast cells of the species Saccharomyces boulardii. The cells look like a powder which is then put into packets. Each packet of Florastor® has 250 mg of S. boulardii in it.

    BIOCODEX, Inc., commitment to excellence
Biocodex, Inc., has strict manufacturing processes that guarantee each packet of Florastor® contains live yeast cells. There are multiple checking and test points by no fewer than 16 doctors to ensure that the cells are both "good" and present in the correct amount prior to being sold.

    What is a probiotic?
Probiotics help the good organisms in your intestine to grow and protect your intestines against "bad" organisms that can make you unwell.

    Why should you take Florastor®?
To promote and maintain intestinal health and normal bowel function??

    Who should take Florastor® ?
Infants, children, adolescents and even adults if they prefer a powder form.

How many packets of Florastor® should you take?
Take one packet twice a day unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

    How should you take Florastor®?

    1. Tear open the packet and empty the contents over semi-solid food like apple sauce, sour cream or yogurt OR
    2. Tear open the packet and empty the contents into drinks like water, orange juice, apple juice, milk or formula.

How long does it take for Florastor® to start to work?
Florastor® powder dissolves in the stomach 30 minutes after swallowing. The cells then spread through the intestine promoting healthy growth and function.

How long does Florastor® continue to have an effect after you stop taking it?
When you stop taking Florastor® S. boulardii cells clear the body within 5 to 7 days.

I have lactose intolerance. Can I still take Florastor®?
Yes. Florastor® only contains a small amount of lactose (32.5 mg, this is 1/3rd of the amount of lactose found in 1 slice of cheese) and has been successfully taken by people who can't eat lactose. Florastor® makes lactase which helps break down lactose. If you have more questions, please speak to your health care professional.

    DO NOT take Florastor® if:
You have a yeast allergy or if you are currently taking any antifungal products (this could stop Florastor® from working).

If using Florastor® in children who may be dehydrated:
Replacement of water and electrolytes is recommended.

Are there any side effects from taking Florastor® ?
Gas, constipation or thirst have been reported infrequently. If you have a central venous catheter, please speak with your health care professional before you start taking Florastor®. Very rare cases of fungemia have been observed in patients with a central venous catheter. In all cases the course was favorable after antifungal treatment.

    Storage:
Florastor® is guaranteed for up to three years when stored at room temperature (25?? C or 77?? F) or below. No Refrigeration Necessary.

    The History of Florastor®

In the early 1920's in Indochina (Indochina is the peninsula of southeast Asia pictured in blue), French microbiologist Henri Boulard was looking for a new strain of yeast that would withstand extreme heat in order to make good wine. Brewers yeast has a development temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but Boulard was looking for something more heat resistant.

There was an outbreak of cholera in one of the villages he was traveling through, and he noticed that the local people were stopping the diarrhea by drinking a certain tea. He found out they were taking the skins from a litchi (the litchi comes from the Chinese tree Litchi chinensis that bears bright red fruits, each of which has a large single seed with a white, fleshy, edible aril), cooking the litchi skins and drinking the boiled water as tea.

Henri succeeded in isolating the agent responsible for treating the diarrhea. It was a special strain of yeast of the "Saccharomyces" genus, which he named after himself, "Saccharomyces boulardii."

    Biocodex, Paris, France

1947:  Mr. Michel Hublot, a doctor of pharmacy, founded Biocodex along with Mr. Francois Vallet, graduate in law. Mr. Henri Boulard met with Biocodex and made arrangements with Biocodex to purchase the rights to his strain of Saccharomyces boulardii and the fermentation process. Biocodex holds the patents on this strain of Saccharomyces and the fermentation process. All research and studies to date have been done on Biocodex's strain of Saccharomyces boulardii lyo.

1966:  Building of an ultra-modern factory and research center near Beauvais, France, with the aim of centralizing production to ensure the highest pharmaceutical production and safety standards.

1974:  Creation of a new corporate office in Montrouge, France. Biocodex at this time has been successfully promoting Ultra-Levure (Florastor®) throughout Europe, and to date it is being used in over 80 countries worldwide.

1987:  Biocodex, Inc., the first research center in the United States is created in Seattle, Washington. Research and studies are done on Clostridium difficile disease, antibiotic associated diarrhea, and other intestinal health problems.

1990:  Opening of a new state-of-the-art Research Center located in Compiegne, France, with modern facilities for research, development, and advancing further studies on this strain of non-pathogenic yeast.

2000:  Biocodex, Inc., new corporate office and distribution center for Florastor® is created in Creswell, Oregon.

    Research Review:

Florastor®, one of the main treatments for loose stools in Europe, has been clinically proven and is now available in the United States. Extensive clinical trials in America and Europe support Florastor’s efficacy and safety.

Florastor® contains Saccharomyces boulardii lyo and has been published in major scientific journals such as JAMA, The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology, The BMJ, and many others.

Florastor®, from Biocodex Inc., has been tested and researched in the USA over the last 14 years.

    Florastor® Key Points

  • Florastor® is a probiotic. Probiotics are live microorganisms that produce therapeutic or preventive health benefits. In the US probiotics are considered dietary supplements. Probiotics help to return the body’s intestines back to normal after gastric upset from antibiotic therapy, bacterial and viral infections.
  • Florastor®, Saccharomyces boulardii, is a natural probiotic that acts as temporary flora and destroys pathogenic (bad) bacteria. This means
    • decreasing abdominal discomfort
    • reducing the number of stools
    • improving the consistency of stools
    • protecting the intestinal wall
    • maintaining intestinal function
  • Florastor® has been clinically researched and is marketed in over 80 countries, guaranteeing you of its safety and efficacy
  • Florastor® has over 50 years of safety data from patients of all ages from infants to seniors meaning everyone can benefit from Florastor
  • Biocodexs’ manufacturing process ensures five billion live S. boulardii cells per 250 mg capsule
  • Florastor® has a three year shelf life due to the high manufacturing standard
  • Florastor® does not need to be refrigerated as the live cells are freeze dried to be shelf stable
  • Florastor® is unique; it is non-pathogenic yeast, not bacterium, brewers or bakers yeast, meaning Florastor® is resistant to antibiotics as well as low pH and bile salts
  • S. boulardii (Florastor® ) is tropical yeast found to develop and work best at 30º C (Celsius), unlike other yeasts that develop at 10º C and 20º C. Florastor® is more likely to have a positive result due to its sustainability at higher temperatures
  • S. boulardii remains intact as it enters the digestive tract and is resistant to both low pH and bile salts, so its effect can be realized starting in the duodenum
  • Florastor® is manufactured to the highest ethical pharmaceutical standards and adheres to the CGMP (Certified Good Manufacturing Practice;) you can be confident that what our product states on the label is actually in the bottle
  • Studies have shown Florastor® to be resistant to many commonly used antibiotics (except antifungal or antimycotics)
  • Florastor® can be taken with standard antibiotics without any loss of effect or destruction of live S. boulardii cells

What effect does Florastor® have on the intestinal tract?

    1. Saccharomyces boulardii (Florastor®) secretes a 54KDa protein protease, which has been shown to neutralize certain bacterial toxins and prevent the negative bacteria from adhering to the intestinal receptor sites.
    2. Florastor® has been shown to stimulate an immune response in the intestinal mucosa, secretory IgA and IgG, which then helps to strengthen the digestive tract’s defenses against infection.
    3. In studies Florastor® has been shown to increase a trophic or repair effect by enhancing the metabolic structure of the mucosa.
    4. Florastor® releases what are referred to as polyamines: spermine, spermidine and putrescine, which are implicated in stimulating the enzymatic activity of the colonic mucosa in growing, multiplying and repairing of impaired intestinal cells.
    5. When polyamines are released there is an increase in disaccharidases: lactase, sucrase and maltase. The absence of these enzymes can compound certain forms of diarrhea, especially food allergy associated diarrhea.
    6. Florastor® will also re-establish the properties of normal intestinal microflora and normal intestinal balance when any disruption of the ecological system of the intestinal tract occurs.

Can Florastor® be recommended for patients with lactose intolerance?
There is no milk protein found in Florastor® . However, it does contain lactose monohydrate in a very small amount (32.5 mg). Many lactose and dairy sensitive patients have reported good results while taking Florastor® . Florastor® activates the body’s own production of disaccharide enzymes, lactase, sucrase and maltase, which helps digest the lactose. Click here for more information [opens a new window].
